Last night at the Miniature Tigers/ Freelance Whales show at the Troubadour in West Hollywood, I learned three very important things. 1) I want to marry a dapper, adorable indie rocker; 2) It is indeed possible to die of happiness (and I can say that from experience, since I died of happiness at least 5 times last night); And 3) There’s nothing quite like the magic of an intimate underground concert. While I’ve been to my fair share of amazing concerts over the years, last night’s show might take the cake as the best one yet.
Some things are pretty fun (for example, trampolines, high fives and not being around Mel Gibson) and some things are so much fun that your brain explodes into a rainbow and soars over a mountain made of gum drops directly into the sun. The show I attended at Scripp’s the Motely pushed dangerously close to brain exploding.
The totally lovable female trio Lovers have this week’s top album at KSPC! Dark Light is a sweet, poppy, catchy, dancey, and all-over infectious album! Last Friday the concert I’ve been organizing for over a month took place, featuring the Denver-based group Tennis and LA-local Kisses. It was one of the most stressful days of my life. I kept thinking of all the terrible scenarios that could occur that would turn the night into one hella-mediocre event that students would be all “eh” about. Fortunately, shit came together last minute and I got to have that feeling when everyone is happy for you and patting you on the back and you’re listening to sweet jams with everyone you like and people are happy, because of something you did. I mean, I pretty much just made up “that feeling”… but it happened, and it felt like my birthday!
I first heard of Twin Shadow around this time last year through Urban Outfitters’ Music Mondays blog, which collects the best new hipster-approved tracks in bite-sized weekly instalments. “Castles In The Snow” stood out to me because it was so different from everything else I was listening to at the time: its atmosphere is melancholy, irresistibly beautiful and weightless all at once. Now that I have had the privilege of listening to Twin Shadow’s first full-length album Forget, I am pleased to see that it reads in much the same way as that sample track. Although the songs are tinged with sorrow and an abstract feeling of unease, they often defy any superficial negativity and soar to inspiring musical heights.

The Modern Superstitions isn’t like most teenage bands. Hailing from Toronto, this teenage trio of high school buddies step onto the scene with their debut album All The Things We’ve Been Told. The band blasts through with short and sweet six-track LP that flaunts all their quirky little traits. The heart of the Modern Superstitions lies in their lead vocalist Nyssa Rosaleen who adds a fierce, electric voice to the already dazzling popish tunes that makes you feel like you’re back in the ‘60s. Her voice has the confidence and swagger of an experienced singer and makes the young band seem beyond their years. All six songs tend to dwell on the topic of young love, which is one of the only times when you realize you’re listening to a such a youthful band. Characterized by strong guitar melodies and steady, cadenced beats, their songs effortlessly float through pop, rock and punk.

Instead of spending this Halloween in the ITS parking structure grinding to some random mash up artist and drinking vodka out of a hidden flask, I drove out to Hollywood with some friends and saw my all-time favorite band play an incredibly epic show. How’s that for a change of plans?
