Hello all!

For those of you who may or may not know me, my name is Winona and I’ll be working here at KSPC this summer as music director. Already on my first day on the job I’ve put together the charts from this last week and published them right here for you. I will keep you updated on what’s going on here at KSPC over the summer (this means fun things like shows, events at the station, and much more)!

Robert Davi is an American actor and jazz singer. He has played such roles as Vietnam veteran and Special Agent Johnson in Die Hard, the villainous Jake Fratelli in The Goonies, and Al Torres in Showgirls. However, Davi is perhaps best known for playing drug lord Franz Sanchez in the 1989 James Bond film Licence to Kill as well as FBI Special Agent Baily Malone in the NBC television series Profiler. Classically trained as a singer, Davi launched his professional singing career in 2011 performing Frank Sinatra classics. He opened as a headliner at The Venetian, in Las Vegas, Nevada, on February 23, 2012.

I hate it when songs that I like end too soon, so the fact that “Little People (Black City)” is my favorite track from Matthew Dear’s 2010 album Black City is extremely convenient. Clocking in at 9:21, the song takes you on a thorough tour through a pulsing futuristic cityscape, not ending a moment too soon but never feeling like it goes on too long. The beats are layered and unique, with synth sounds that swoop and crawl, but never sound jumbled or disorganized (on the contrary, its extremely smooooooth). “Little People” is straight up groovy, with a dark edge—like the soundtrack for a trip to a zombie roller-skating rink (What? You guys don’t hang out at zombie roller rinks after school?) You can listen here.

A sad prospect is on the horizon–there is only one more of KSPC’s “5-c Invasion” in-store shows at Rhino Records. Fortunately, this fourth and final show, happening this Sunday, April 15th, will be also be a joyous occasion since it features Pomona College’s very own Me Lacey Flowers (formerly known as Ryan Wieghard & the Abstract Truth)!

Me Lacey Flowers is a group of syncopators that got lost in a basement filled with left-handed acoustic guitars. Although being right-handed by birth, they didn’t let this stop them from jabbing at the strings and weeping when their father played them There’s A Riot Going On. The group features William Mullaney on the drums and Michael Stock-Matthews on the bass.

I know this post is a roller-coaster ride of emotion, since this glorious performance is a full 4 days away. But there’s more happy news–for those of you who can’t bear to wait until Sunday, Me Lacey Flowers will be doing an in-studio at 11pm TONIGHT on Flower Hours with Lilly.

Stream online at kspc.org or turn your radio dials to 88.7 tonight to hear Me Lacey Flowers, and if you find yourself mystically drawn to Rhino Records in the village around 3 pm on Sunday afternoon, don’t fear, it is just the divine forces that have culminated from the last three weeks of wonderful local music beckoning you.

Hello from your friendly DJ Rubix! A little-known fact about me is that I love to create artwork inspired by my favorite music. Recently, the overwhelming popularity of Young & Old around KSPC inspired me to paint a piece specifically dedicated to this chart-topping album, and to usher in a new brand of blog post!

The piece you see above is my visual interpretation of the colorful, “beach-poppy” music of Tennis. The girl, abstract in her lack of name and permanent place, represents their pretty, carefree, and slightly wistful sonic stylings. She is surrounded by soothing waters of harmony that ebb and flow with the beat, and all appears serene.

The album title Young & Old, however, suggests deeper concerns with aging and mortality – motifs that run counter to the sense of innocence conveyed by the music. Tennis typically bathes their tracks in the warm glow of nostalgia, but the lyrics on this album deal with issues of identity and personal legacy. When Alaina Moore sings “Take Me To Heaven,” for example, her vocals are sweet, but the content of the song is more melancholy in nature: “When I pass away, this will fade away; what promises I make, I know I may not stay.” I portrayed this awareness of the passage of time through the subtly fading ends of the girl’s cascading hair.

Perhaps Tennis’ underlying message is that time inevitably marches on, so we should remember to appreciate each fleeting moment, and do our best to make a positive difference in the lives of those around us.

Young & Old is a gorgeous, uplifting album. If you haven’t heard it yet, be sure to check it out, and when you do, I hope my artwork helps you to consider it in a different light. Thanks for stopping by, and stay tuned for the next edition of Animated Albums!

Art and review by Rachel Davidson. Tune in to Your Next Favorite Thing with DJ Rubix every Friday from 4-6!
