Staff Pick Baths - “Cerulean”

Baths is the moniker of outer-LA native Will Wiesenfeld. At all of 21 years, Wiesenfeld has made his name as a producer, musician and remix master on the LA scene. That may be over-stating it just a little bit, but what he’s doing is certainly impressive. Even more impressive is Cerulean, his first album under the name Baths out on Anticon Records now.

Cerulean is lush electro-pop, dense or floating in all the right places, sometimes all at once. It is wonderfully conceived and spans several genres and scenes, from the cosmic glitch-hop of Flying Lotus, to the ambient to the  straight-forward electronic pop of Passion Pit’s Chunk of Change. The record flows and is a joy to listen to from beginning to end. I feel like I’m writing his mid-semester high school report or grading a paper, but if Cerulean was a final essay, and I was Wiesenfeld’s teacher, it would be the one I’d keep to show new students how to do it right.

Saturday 3pm-5pm (pacifico)

Hola radio escuchas!  Today in the first hour we will present a sonic tapestry of field recordings that were collected on my recent trip to Michoacan and Mexico City.  Some of these sounds are found, processed, dissected, rearranged and re-composed.  We will also feature new work from Mexico City based composer Jorge Rodriguez, as well as excerpts from a sound installation by Antonio Russek.

During the second hour I will announce the parties happening in the L.A. nightlife/daylife (if you want fiesta, L.A. will give you fiesta :) And I will also share some new music from the localglobal underground.  Welcome to the Good Life…

Subversive

Subversive is a member of the Droid Behavior crew, largely responsible for the resurgence of quality warehouse events in Los Angeles. He is a believer in the deep sounds that bubble up from Detroit and Berlin. Subversive’s mixing has matured into a well developed sound that attempts to bridge the past with the present. He uses software along with hardware synths and turntables in order to create a more unique sound that reflects the future of what Techno can be.

You can hear him mixing live this SATURDAY MAY 8TH on Good Life Radio from 3pm to 5pm.
