Volunteer

It's true, KSPC's shows are hosted by volunteers; however, there are many essential things going on behind-the-scenes that help to keep KSPC on the air. If you'd like to know more about what volunteer opportunities are available, read on.

Click below to download one of our volunteer application forms.

PDF files can be viewed and printed from any Windows, DOS, UNIX, MAC, or OS-2 platform that has Acrobat reader software (free from Adobe Systems, Inc.) installed and configured for use with the browser. Get the free reader.

Please print out and mail your completed application form to:

KSPC Volunteer Program
Thatcher Music Building
340 N. College Ave.
Claremont, CA 91711-6340.

Once we have your application on file, it will be reviewed during the current recruiting period. You will be contacted if there are spots available in our training program.

We accept volunteer applications at any time of the year; however, our recruitment and staff training follows the academic calendar of the Claremont Colleges. If we are not currently recruiting staff we will keep your application on file for the next recruitment period.

Our recruitment periods directly relate to the academic calendar:

Claremont Colleges students occupy most positions during the Spring and Fall semesters. Student recruitment happens prior to or at the beginning of each semester; however, we will accept new student staff at any time during a semester (please note that on-air positions may be unavailable later in the semester).

Community Volunteers are most needed during our Winter and Summer breaks. We typically begin recruiting in March for the Summer break, and in October for Winter break.

Important Note: Submitting a volunteer application does not guarantee a staff position. KSPC is funded by the Claremont Colleges and as such we prioritize Student Staff applications over Community Volunteer applications.

Publicity: Gets the word out about KSPC. Create and distribute fliers, contribute to semi-annual Program Guide, generally help publicizing the station or our events.

Promotions: On-air giveaways. KSPC contacts venues, promoters, and labels to get tickets/merchandise to be given away on our radio shows.

KSPC Events: KSPC has several regular events, including CD and Record Expos and our Blowout concert series. Help is always needed with everything from organization to operating the admission table.

Music Reviews: Assist the music directors by reviewing the new releases to be played by the DJs. Music staff screens music for content as well as gives a general review to each album/single and rates the songs.

Live Music: Assists with live bands playing in-studio as well as Blowout concerts. This involves many things, from setting up equipment to engineering to helping run live music events.

News: KSPC airs 3 live newscasts a day. Newscasters present a 3- to 5-minute newscast once a week on the air.

Public Service: This is your opportunity to get the word out about non-profit organizations, charities, and cultural happenings. Collect and write up information to go on public service announcement cards to be read by DJs.

Public Affairs: KSPC has a weekly public affairs show to inform the public of national and international goings-on. Find pertinent information, interviews, and anything worthy of making into a show.

Computing: Help with KSPC’s website, blog, and social networking.

Production: KSPC has recorded announcements which are played by all DJs, including a weekly concert calendar, announcements on KSPC events, and public service announcements. Learn to use the computer equipment to produce MP3's for broadcast.

DJ: DJs host a weekly, 2 hour show. All DJs must go through KSPC's DJ training, record an aircheck and pass a written test before they are approved to go on-air. First-time DJs have the option of applying for an underground, jazz, classical, or hip-hop show using KSPC's library. Additionally, all DJs must participate in an off-the-air activity.
