On Thurs., Feb. 19, jazz bassist extraordinaire and Claremont Colleges alum Ray Drummond stopped by his old stomping grounds — KSPC, thankyouverymuch — to speak with Wal, host of KSPC jazz radio show “Bop, Drop and Roll.” The New York-based Drummond performed a gig that same night with jazz guitarist Russell Malone, held at the Marian Miner Cook Athenaeum at Claremont McKenna College (or, as Ray remembers it, the former Claremont Men’s College).
Drummond told us that he once had a jazz radio show on KSPC for three years and was already performing as a bassist at the time, playing local gigs and hanging with his fellow students.
Wal spoke with Drummond about living his formidable years in Claremont at the colleges, his professional career as an in-demand jazz bassist, some of the many great talents that he’s been able to work with in the decades he been in the biz, and even some of the non-music related things that Drummond did! He was very surprised to see the transformation of KSPC in the time he’s been away. We were just happy to have him back, even if it was for just over an hour. (Hey, we even got a signed CD!)
The interview will be broadcast on Wal’s “Bop, Drop, and Roll” show on Wednesday, March 4, 10am – noon — tune in!
