This is the 6th solo release from Mark Nelson, the guitarist/vocalist from the excellent Labradford, the 5th on the estimable Kranky Records. As Pan-American, Nelson makes minimalist electronic music, teetering on the brink of ambience, with an organic bent – live drums, acoustic guitar, and vocals are common occurrences on this album. He uses electronics to surround his instruments on all sides by electronic haze or clarity, depending on his mood. ‘White Bird Release’ generally seems like a contemplative album, not leaning towards joyous or hopeless overall, and makes a great nighttime listen. If you’re a fan of Fennesz, Keith Fullerton Whitman, and WZT Hearts, and you’ll be in for a treat.
