DJ Cosmonaut here, and I’m going to be writing about one of my favorite musicians.
Calvin Johnson, born in Olympia, WA in 1962, founded K Records in 1982 and the label has been going strong since. Chances are if you tune in to KSPC on any given day something from K is bound to be playing. He has a successful solo career and is/was a member of bands such as Beat Happening, The Halo Benders and Dub Narcotic Sound System, winning fans over with his unique style of guitar playing and baritone voice.
On Friday, Jan. 30th, Calvin Johnson came to Claremont to perform at the Grove House in Pitzer. Jane and I were able to get an interview with him. I’ll be airing it again this week on my show Friday 8AM-10AM, and if you don’t want to get up that early it has also been posted on the interviews section of our website here. At the show, Moses Campbell and Sandman opened the set. Moses Campbell, used to playing at louder venues, were flexible enough to play at the tiny Grove House and warmed up the crowd with their uncommon indie/punk blend (an accordion in a punk band? awesome). Sandman was a huge hit with his unique combo of folk guitar and rapping. Check out some video here.
When those two wrapped up their acts, Calvin took the floor and captivated the audience. But don’t take my word for it, if you missed the show you can catch some clips here.

Overall it was a great night of live music and I’m sure all of these acts gained some new fans. If you want to keep updated about music events happening in the area, keep on listening to KSPC, and don’t forget to sign up for the mailing list on the front page.
